The SHARK 2 is really nice, true two person, three season, lightweight tent. Though marginally heavier than some 2 person tents, the SHARK 2 is made from more robust fabrics, has more features and provides an impressive all round superior hydrostatic head.
Given its size and weight our SHARK 2 makes for a very nice quality, spacious one person tent for motorcycle camping or car camping where the weight is not quite such a critical issue as when such as solo backpacking. When used as a one person tent the extra interior space provided for motorcyclist and gear, along with the two vestibules can be a real bonus.
This two person tent has been manufactured for us by GeerTop. The SHARK 2 has been manufactured to exacting standards and to a very good specification, with a higher hydrostatic head compared to many other lightweight tents. This is a rather interesting and unusual design of tent - a hybrid between a dome tent and a semi-geodesic tent providing a very stable structure. The SHARK 2 is a quality tent of very nice, eye-catching design.

Good quality materials and high quality workmanship provide an extremely well specced, relatively lightweight tent, that can compete favourably with the more expensive big brand name tents in a similar category, especially when it comes to value for money.
This tent has two large entrances which provide easy entry and exit, the inner of which feature double doors. That is (like our Glencoe 1 tents), each inner tent door employs both a full polyester door and a full no-see-um bug mesh door that can be opened or closed independently. This is a very nice feature that can provide extra privacy when required while also allowing greater ventilation and air flow options. The inner tent of the SHARK 2 consists of more full polyester than many lightweight tents (including the Desert Fox 2 that we supply), making it warmer and less draughty than tents that feature a mostly all mesh inner. This also makes it a three season tent that will likely cope more comfortably with all four seasons in the UK.
The tent comes with two quality 8.5mm ProFlex 7001-T6 aviation grade aluminium alloy tent poles; these tent poles are shock-corded, strong and flexible, and anodised for greater corrosion resistance. The tent also comes with two guylines and 10 x 5mm aluminium candy cane tent pegs as standard (with the option of our lighter 10g aluminium V-section tent pegs - see our other listings).
The inner tent sewn-in bathtub floor measures 200cm x 140cm with high 15cm sides. Unlike many so-called two person tents that are really only suitable for one person and their kit, the SHARK 2 is a spacious, genuine two person tent. The tent pole configuration of the SHARK 2 tent make it a hybrid between a dome tent and a semi-geodesic tent. The unusual pole configuration does create a very stable structure giving steep sides which in turn provide a very nice, roomy interior and airy sleeping space with a good internal height of 115cm. Two 50cm vestibules provide plenty of room under the flysheet for rucksacks, boots, etc.
Whilst some people might consider this two person tent to be not so lightweight at 2.75kgs, you have to bear in mind that this tent has a warmer, near full polyester inner tent and both polyester and mesh doors, which are extremely nice features, and which we feel justifies the small additional weight penalty. Add to this the fact that the SHARK 2 really is a genuine two person (and their kit) tent, then this means that when the tent is carried between two people there is only an individual weight burden of just over a kilogram each. And, yes, we know that you can get two person tents that weigh a lot less, but they can cost you an arm and a leg, be less spacious, made from lighter less resilient materials, and in some cases even be less waterproof!
The SHARK 2 features a PU-coated polyester flysheet with an extremely good hydrostatic head of 5000mm, and with full UV protection. The tough, 210D PU coated Oxford fabric bathtub floor features a hydrostatic head of 6000mm, and being 210D is considerably more robust and resilient than many other lightweight tent floors. All seams are taped to provide a fully waterproof seal at the stitching. All seams are double-stitched and reinforced at potential stress points. And although the polyester flysheet is a marginally heavier fabric than equivalent tents that employ thinner silicone-coated nylon, it is quite strong, and of course it does not wet-out and hence sag like nylon flysheets do when it rains - worth bearing in mind.
Lengthwise, with a floor length of 200cm and steep inner tent walls, this tent will comfortably sleep people up to around 6'3". While the 140cm width will easily accommodate two full size sleeping pads or inflatable mattresses, side by side, or indeed a double airbed - again, the same of which cannot be said for all so-called two person tents.
To erect the SHARK 2, the two long shock-corded alloy tent poles are fed through full length sleeves on the inner tent and located into metal eyelets on the four corners (it is easier to do this before you stake down the inner tent floor). Once the two poles have been fed through their sleeves and slotted into their respective metal eyelets on the straps in the four corners of the inner tent floor, the tent will free stand. You then just need to peg down the four corner straps and the tent is up, ready for the flysheet to be applied.
Like all good quality modern tents, the flysheet is draped over the inner tent and buckle-clipped into the corner straps. There are numerous Velcro attachment points on the inner tent and flysheet that mate together to hold the flysheet securely in place over the inner tent. It is just then a matter of pegging out the flysheet nice and evenly. The straps on the four corners of that buckle-clip the inner and outer tents together are adjustable for fine tuning the tension.
Make no mistake, the SHARK 2 is a very nice spec, good quality, true two person lightweight tent that is spacious enough to comfortably sleep 2 adults with room for their rucksacks and kit in the vestibules. This two person tent nicely complements our range of smaller one person tents.
Note: All modern lightweight tents feature a lightweight flooring fabric, and though it can be made extremely waterproof, it is less resilient, hence potentially more susceptible to damage by sharp implements - thorns, stones, etc. than the thicker, heavier materials employed by tents of old. If you expect to be camping on unfavourable ground, then you can employ an additional lightweight groundsheet for the extra protection it would offer to your lightweight tent floor.
