In 1996 the author began working in Peninsular Malaysia and soon focused on the amphibians and reptiles of the Seribuat Archipelago off Peninsular Malaysia's southeast coast.

For centuries this archipelago served traders and mariners alike but it wasn't until the mid 1960s that biological explorations began on its largest island, Tioman.

The work of Dr. Grismer and his multinational team continued these efforts and beginning in the late 1990s, spent the next six years exploring all 62 of the archipelago's islands. Their efforts resulted in several scientific publications that collectively reported 171 new island records and the discovery and description of 13 new species previously unknown to science.

Amphibians and Reptiles of the Seribuat Archipelago brings together these works in a single book. Taxonomic keys, description, and color photographs make the identification of every species in the Seribuat Archipelago easy for both the untrained naturalist and scientist alike. Sections on each species' natural history and distribution provide users with means on how to find and observe species they find interesting. The distribution section is cross-indexed to an island checklist for every species on every island in the archipelago. Additionally, the archipelago's geological history is discussed and detailed descriptions of the islands are supplemented with color photographs of the varied habitats they comprise.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Dr. L. Lee Grismer is a systematist and evolutionary biologist who has discovered and described over 80 species of amphibians and reptiles new to science.

He received a Bachelor of Science degree and Master's Degree from San Diego State University and a Ph.D. from Loma Linda University. He is currently a Professor of Biology at La Sierra University in Riverside, California, and a Visiting Professor of the Institute for Environment and Development (LESTARI), University Kebangsaan Malaysia in Bangi, Malaysia.

Dr. Grismer spent nearly 25 years studying the amphibians and reptiles of Mexico's Baja California peninsula and its associated islands, resulting in nearly 100 publications and an award winning book.
