About the Artist
Harry Watson was a portrait and landscape painter who trained at Scarborough
and later at the Royal College of Art. Initially he painted in a
conventional late Victorian style but he later developed into a plein
air painter whose works exhibit great freshness and spontaneity,
reminiscent of Clausen and Bastien-Lepage. He typically used bright
colours and his loose style gives a strong impressionist effect. The
Tate Gallery, the Christchurch Gallery and the Brighton Museum & Art
Gallery, amongst others, all hold examples of his work.
