Part II provides details and more technical information on how parrot feathers get their colors (including pigments that are unique to parrots), why different areas of plumage vary in color and what drives coloration – not only the need for camouflage.

Part III, 45 parrot species are selected for an in-depth look at their plumage and habits.

This book will hopefully encourage readers to look closely at the plumage (the colors, the adornments, the patterns and the textures) – and the forms (the elegance and adaptations to different life styles).

It will bring a new appreciation of parrots at a time when so many species are struggling for survival in their natural habitat, due to human disturbance. If it can encourage more people to support parrot conservation, it will do so much more than provide the pleasure and excitement that the color photographs will bring.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Rosemary Low, aviculture, zoos and conservation have been the focus of Rosemary Low’s life. Age 12, she started to breed Budgerigars and she built up a collection of and bred to more unusual species. In the late 1980s and during the 1990s she was curator of birds at Loro Parque, Tenerife, and Palmitos Park, Gran Canaria. She is known for her publishing output – more than 20 books on parrots, translated into ten languages – and for hundreds of articles published in avicultural journals throughout the world. She has spoken at conferences on aviculture and conservation in many countries. Watching parrots in their natural habitats, especially in connection with conservation projects, is her greatest pleasure. She still keeps lories and Pyrrhura parakeets.
