TITLE: Parrots – A Celebration of their Beauty AUTHOR: Rosemary Low DESCRIPTION:
Countless books have been written about parrots from many viewpoints – their lives in the wild, conservation, aviculture and companion birds. But one of the most obvious traits about this group of birds is their outstanding beauty. Yet the extraordinary truth is that no one had ever written a book to celebrate this aspect of these amazing birds! Until now! Rosemary Low takes a look at parrots and their plumage in a way that has never been done before. For 60 years she has marveled at their unparalleled variety of colors and designs. From the 12 cm long Blue-crowned Hanging Parrot (Loriculus Galgulus) a living jewel, to the startling hyacinth plumage of the biggest of the Neotropics (one meter in length), the surprises among the many species are never-ending. The first part of this book focuses on their colors and their beauty. In one fascinating chapter, she describe the results of a poll of 44 leading parrot scientists, conservationists, artists and photographers from 15 countries for their “Top Ten most Beautiful Parrots”. Not to be missed! Part II provides details and more technical information on how parrot feathers get their colors (including pigments that are unique to parrots), why different areas of plumage vary in color and what drives coloration – not only the need for camouflage. Part III, 45 parrot species are selected for an in-depth look at their plumage and habits. This book will hopefully encourage readers to look closely at the plumage (the colors, the adornments, the patterns and the textures) – and the forms (the elegance and adaptations to different life styles). It will bring a new appreciation of parrots at a time when so many species are struggling for survival in their natural habitat, due to human disturbance. If it can encourage more people to support parrot conservation, it will do so much more than provide the pleasure and excitement that the color photographs will bring. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Rosemary Low, aviculture, zoos and conservation have been the focus of Rosemary Low’s life. Age 12, she started to breed Budgerigars and she built up a collection of and bred to more unusual species. In the late 1980s and during the 1990s she was curator of birds at Loro Parque, Tenerife, and Palmitos Park, Gran Canaria. She is known for her publishing output – more than 20 books on parrots, translated into ten languages – and for hundreds of articles published in avicultural journals throughout the world. She has spoken at conferences on aviculture and conservation in many countries. Watching parrots in their natural habitats, especially in connection with conservation projects, is her greatest pleasure. She still keeps lories and Pyrrhura parakeets. Harcover, 152 pages, over 130 color photos.
