Malta is an archipelago in the central Mediterranean between Sicily and the North African coast. It's a nation known for historic sites related to a succession of rulers including the Romans, Moors, Knights of Saint John, French and British. 


coin of the order of Saint Jean de Jerusalem ORDER of MALTA (2 TARIS) w /  COUNTERMARK --RARE, 1636 to 1657 grandmaster JP  Lascaris.

Knights Jerusalem. - To counter the growing problem of counterfeit coins, Grandmasters of the Order of Malta would send copper coins to the mint for examination and, if genuine, stamp them with a countermark to indicate they were authentic. Each Grandmaster had his own stamp – sometimes more than one – and these counterstamped coins are dated by the seals on the coins. This 2 Tari coin has  counterstamps.  The most recent counterstamp is the crowned diamond in the irregular impression. Being the last of them, it is what attributes this 
 are the crowned fleur-de-lis of 
coin to Grandmaster Emmanuel de Rohan in 1778. The other counterstamps Grandmaster Adrien Wignacourt (1696), the crowned crescent of Grandmaster Emmanuel Pinto (1741), and what appears to be the head of St. John the Baptist in an oval impression which was used by Grandmaster Raphael Cotoner in 1662.
