During Vietnam war, US Special Forces Operational Detachment B-53 (SFOD B-53) was activated in February 1964 and based at ARVN training camp Long Thanh to support MACV-SOG operations. It was renamed SPECIAL MISSION ADVISORY GROUP (SMAG) in January 1971, it moved to the MACV RECONDO School compound and then in March 1971 took over the 5th SFGrp Headquarters compound. The SMAG mission was to train, advise and assist the ARVN Special Forces in unconventional warfare techniques. The SFOD B-53 was inactivated in April 1972.
