What is a PATS key?
FORD/LINCOLN/MERCURY PATS keys prevent vehicle theft, as each key contains a computer chip with a unique code. PATS stands for "Passive Anti-Theft System" and Ford also sometimes calls it "Securilock". When the vehicle is started, the on-board computer sends out an RF signal which is picked up by the transponder chip in the key. The transponder then returns a unique RF signal to the vehicle's computer, giving it confirmation to start and continue to run. This all happens in less than a second. If the on-board computer does not receive the correct identification code, components such as the fuel pump and starter will remain disabled.
The problem is that if you lose a key it impossible to self-program a new key for your car, as you need two working keys to complete the programming of a third extra key. If you are down to only one key left, it is already TOO LATE! Therefore, it's strongly suggested you make an extra key NOW and program it as a spare. That way, if you lose a key, you've already got a spare that's been programmed.
If you don't make a spare ahead of time, than you'll need to visit your local FORD/LINCOLN/MERCURY dealership so they can program it for you. This can cost as much as $150...so make a spare now!
1. Start with two working keys. If you only have one original key left, you can't program the keys yourself. You MUST have two working keys before you can complete the programming on a third extra key.
2. Next, you'll need to get THIS KEY cut to match your original keys. This can be done at a locksmith or at a good hardware store where they cut keys. Home Depot or Walmart is NOT recommended for key duplication. Once cut, this key will open your doors and trunk and it should also fit in your ignition (although it will NOT start your car until the following programming has been completed).
3. Once this key is cut to match your two current working keys, have all 3 keys at hand and start by putting one of your original keys in the ignition.
4. Turn the ignition cylinder ON (RUN) for three seconds, then turn it back to OFF.
5. Within ten seconds, remove the first original key and insert the second original key, and then turn to ON (RUN) for three seconds, and then back to OFF.
6. Within ten more seconds, insert this new key and turn to ON for three seconds, then turn back to OFF.
7. If you did it right, the security light on the dash will illuminate for three seconds. Your third key should now start your car. Congrats!
8. Repeat this process for any additional keys.
