There is no denying that the Dalmatian is the most elegantly veneered of breeds. His exact origin remains a stubborn mystery. It is unknown whether he sprang, speckled, from the dogs of ancient India or took spotted root even further back in the Egypt of the Pharoahs. By the Middle Ages, the Dalmatian had made a place for himself in the Gypsy caravans that ranged nomadically in the Balkans. It is indisputably from the Dalmatian coast of western Yugoslavia that he takes his name.
