Up for auction is this South Amboy, New Jersey, Charter #3878, $5.00 1902-Plain Back Large Size National, Fr. #600, with treasury signatures of William T. Vernon as Register of the Treasury and Charles H. Treat as Treasurer of The United States.  The cashier of this bank is R.C. Stephenson and the President of the bank is Harry C. Perrine.

This bank chartered on May 2,1888 as “The First National Bank of South Amboy, New Jersey”.  The bank issued 172,180 large size Nationals, from 1888 thru 1929 when the Bureau of Engraving and Printing switched over to printing Series 1929 Small Size National Banknotes.  South Amboy was a one bank town, which makes it more desirable.

The note has ample margins on three sides, it is cut close on the top margin at the left but does not touch the printed border.  There is a strong horizontal fold through the center of the note, as well as numerous vertical folds.  The paper is fairly bright and has some crispness remaining.  There is a small amount of dirt on both sides of this note, a little more so on the reverse.  I don’t see any rips, tears or pinholes in this note.  I would grade this note as a solid Very Fine. Please look at the scans carefully and judge the grade and quality of this note for yourself.  The Kelly Census shows 14 large size notes reported on this bank. There are 2 – Series 1882 $10.00 Brown Backs, 2 – Series 1882 $20.00 Brown Backs, 1 – Series 1902 $10.00 Date Back, 5 - Series 1902 $5.00 Plain Backs and 4 - Series 1902 $10.00 Plain Backs.  This note is new to the census, the new owner can report it if they so choose.

This South Amboy National Banknote also comes with a Postcard printed in 2/Colors Blue and Brown of the actual Bank Building that this note was issued from!!!  The First National Bank of South Amboy is the prominent one story building in the forefront.

This note would make a fine addition to any New Jersey State banknote collection.  The bank was located in Middlesex County, so it should appeal to those collecting that County and its surrounding areas. This note should also appeal to residents from that town.  Don’t let this note get away!
