Description

Hypercium Perforatum is a perennial yellow flowering plant and thought to be native to milder climates of South Eastern Europe.

The oldest recorded use of the pant dates back to ancient Greeks and Romans whom consume the plant for wound healing purposes. There are reports of the plant being used for  also to prevent insanity and keep evil spirits at bay.

It is believed the common name for the plant, Saint Johns Wort, stems from the crusades, where the Knights of Saint John reportedly used the holly herb also as a wound healer.

Although Saint Johns Wort has a long history of medicinal use as a wound healer and painkiller, it is now better known as a natural mood booster and is a registered traditional herbal medicine in the UK.

Saint Johns Wort is one of the most well studies and documented herbs of all time Both hypericin and hyperforin are under study for their potential antibiotic properties.

Mechanism of action

Saint Johns Wort is one of the most studied plants of all time and two compounds occurring in the plant called Hyperforin and Hypericin are of particular pharmacological interest for depression, anxiety, as an antibiotic and much more.

The pharmacology of the herb is complex, studies using extracts have revealed an inhibitory affect on monoamine oxidase enzyme which increases neurotransmitter in the brain.

Further experiments discovered activity at GABA, Glutamate and Adrenergic receptors and the herbs ability to downregulation of beta-adrenergic receptors and an upregulation of serotonin 5-HT(2) receptors in the rat frontal cortex and causes changes in neurotransmitter concentrations in brain areas that are implicated in depression
