Description

 

Sceletium Tortuosum , otherwise known as Kanna or channa is a perennial ground covering plant native to South Africa. Traditionally, the leaves have been chewed, they can alternatively be taken orally or as a tea.

 

Europeans first documented the plant in 1660 by Jan Van Riebeeck and the earliest records of native use date back to the 5 century.

Mechanism of action

 

Active ingredients mesembrine, mesembrenone, mesembrenol and tortuosamine., each with unique pharmacological properties.

 

Studies have proven mesembrine upregulates monoamine transporter activity and inhibits the reuptake of serotonin, collectively increasing serotonin and other monoamines (neurotransmitters) in the synaptic cleft.

 

Studies have also confirmed Mesembrine mediates some of its affect via CB1 receptors.

 

In South Africa, Kanna is fermented in the absence of oxygen to convert the toxic oxalic acid to a non-toxic compound. An additionally chemical reaction occurs in this process, where the mesembrenine is converted to mesembrenone.
