Boscombe Down Hawker Harrier T4 Research Aircraft XW175 Original Oil Painting by Jon Westwood. Painted in 2007. Oil on canvas. Framed. Depicts XW175 conducting advanced flight research testing at Boscombe Down in 2007. XW175 first flew in 1969 and was used as a research and development aircraft until its last flight in 2008, when at the time it was the oldest Harrier jet still flying. In its early years it was used in the development of the avionics and landing aids that enabled the Sea Harrier to perform ship recoveries in poor visibility and at night. Its last activities were as the Vectored-thrust Aircraft Advance Control (VAAC) aircraft testing advanced flight and propulsion control systems now in use in the F-35B Lightning II. This is a contemporary painting by the aviation artist Jonathan Westwood who is an Associate Member of the Guild of Aviation Artists. It was purchased from the artist by a Boscombe Down pilot and has been kept in storage unhung since. The canvas measures approximately 14 by 10 inches and the frame measures approximately 16 by 12 inches. Winsor & Newton canvas and frame. A smaller sized card mounted print of the painting, number 3 of 150 and signed by the artist, is also included. Measures approximately 12 by 10 inches.
