This is a Northwest Coast Indigenous limited edition print entitled "Wak'es" by Kwakwaka'wakw artist Francis Dick. To the Kwakwaka'wakw, Wak'es (wah-kess), or Frog, is a supernatural being that can live on land and in water. It is a messenger between the Sea and the Land and it is revered for its ability to adapt to different environments, its communication skills, and magical singing powers. This print measures 30" x 22", and is from a run of 125 produced in 2011.
Francis Dick is a renowned Kwakwaka'wakw artist born in 1959 in Alert Bay, BC. She is from the Musǥa̱'makw Dzawada̱'enux̱w, or Four Tribes of Kingcome Inlet, and descends from the Kawadelakala (Supernatural Wolf). She began painting in 1985 as a means of honouring her grandmother and brother, who had both recently passed. Francis frequently speaks for various community organizations, women’s groups, and university classes, and her work has been exhibited globally, from Germany to China and beyond.
