World War 2 Ads. Four pages (2 double sides) All in color.
On the front is an ad for Camel Cigarettes. "First in the Service... the favorite cigarette with men in the Army, the Navy, the Marines, and the Coast Guard". It shows two soldiers lighting their cigarettes. "They've got what it takes...if you could see their smiles, their contentment when they light up their favorite cigarette..." There's an insert with a woman war worker who says "No matter how much I smoke Camels never go flat on my taste ..." "For taste and for my throat, Camels are tops in enjoyment!" Another insert explains that the "T zone" taste and throat, is where cigarettes are judged.
On the reverse side is an ad with a painting by Lewis Daniel, for a classical symphony. The product being advertised is Capehart Phonograph - Radio. The ad explains that products are now not being produced because they are only making items for the war effort.
The third page is a painting by famous illustrator Pete Hawley, known for his pin-ups. This is an ad for Jantzen, America's Swim Suit. Collectors of pin-ups will appreciate this ad.
The fourth page is a classic cartoon of Elmer and Elsie, the Borden's Cows. Elsie is arranging roses in a vase and declares "Elmer is courting me all over again since I've been drinking Hemo!" a vitamin drink. The copy is a little story with Elsie and Elmer talking about the benefits of the pep from this affordable drink.
These four ads give a good impression of the times and issues of the time, particularly how women were portrayed.
These pages are from the June 28, 1943 issue of Life, the Souvenir War issue..
