Morro Rock at Sunset by Barbara Snyder
Morro Rock located in Morro Bay, California is the most famous of the Nine Sisters, a string of extinct volcano peaks, referred to as volcano plugs, that run through San Luis Obispo country. Many construction projects mined the rock itself for use in building the breakwater of Morro Bay and Port San Luis Obispo and the famous Bixby Bridge on well-traveled Highway One.
In 1963 the blasting was stopped and in 1966 the title to the rock was transferred to the State of California. Both the City of Morro Bay and the Country of San Luis Obispo have had it declared a California Registered Historical Landmark and it is now a designated bird sanctuary for the Peregrine Falcon and other seabirds.
The rock got its name "El Morro" in 1542 by Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriquez Cabrillo and it is said to be 23 million years old. The rock stands 576 feet tall and has been a navigational aid for mariners for over 300 years.
It is often referred to as the "Gibraltar of the Pacific" and is the last of the nine peaks that extend from the city of San Luis Obispo to Morro Bay. You can count all nine of these peaks as you make the drive from San Luis Obispo to Morro Bay.
Another one of the peaks was made famous when the local contractor and restaurant owner Alex Madonna was trying to develop a project on the peak located near his famous restaurant and hotel, The Madonna Inn. The Madonna Inn itself is also a famous stop for tourist traveling up the coast. The New York Times called the Madonna Inn a fantasy-themed hotel of excesses and charm.
Barbara Snyder Biography
Barbara has always lived on the Central Coast of California. As a California native she has always felt the allure of the abundant variety of natural features offered in her home state. Born in Santa Maria, Barbara graduated from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo as a history major, English minor. She earned her Master's degree in education from the same university and began a teaching and school site administrator career that spanned over 3 decades.
During that time photography became an important part of hers and her husband's lives. Summer travel provided the opportunities to see new places and subjects that would expand their photographic interests, seeing the old and new places that they shared with one another. Being a co-owner of art and frame galleries that Floyd started provided the stage and experiences that have added to the repertoire of skills and versatility in thinking. Barbara has been featured in Strictly Business Magazine, a former Central Coast publication, designed to showcase local talents and to celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit. She has also written several articles and provided photographic contributions to that and other publications.
Whether it be seascapes, vineyards, desert, mountains, forest and all that in between, the pursuit of "fresh, natural and serene" subjects and scenes have inspired Barbara's work. She has shown a special fascination in her most recent works with the tropical features of Hawaii and the desert landscapes of Arizona. Barbara's work offers a simplistic, rich view of life.
She and her husband, Floyd, have endeavored to
bring otherwise little-noticed scenes to the public eye. Barbara and Floyd have
brought the peace and tranquility of nature into many homes. The images that
the Snyder's have tried to capture hold the viewers attention with the sheer
beauty and visual appeal that provides the lyrical commentary of nature's many
gifts.
