Root-division leaf pup of
Sansevieria masoniana
Mason's Congo – Whale Fin
Sansevieria masoniana is an extraordinary semi-succulent
perennial plant species originally collected in Africa, in
what at the time was known as the Belgian Congo
(then Zaire, today Democratic Republic of the
Congo
) by Maurice Mason, a renowned botanist
and plant collector from Norfolk, England
after whom the species is named.
It has wonderful long dark green leathery
leaves with light green dappled patterns, often
presenting unique maroon-red banded edges.
The stiff, wide (8-10") leaves will grow quite large —
as tall as 6 feet, though typically around 3-4 feet.
Younger plants that are frequently divided can
remain around 2 feet for several years
before very tall new foliage emerges.
Excellent as a large houseplant, it
tends to tolerate low light levels.
Sansevieria is generally a forgiving
and tolerant genus ~ fast-growing,
vigorous and easy to cultivate.
It prefers soil with good drainage
and takes well to container culture,
suitable for growing indoors as a
houseplant, greenhouse plant and
in frost-free outdoor gardens.
Preferring bright indirect light, it also
takes full sun, as well as partial shade
(in very hot areas it prefers light shade or morning sun).
A hardy species, Sansevieria masoniana
will thrive in any collection. It has low
water requirements, surviving well
with infrequent irrigation.
S. masoniana enjoys shade
or hot and dry conditions —
and grows on almost any soil.
Very easy to grow and care for,
this tough, bulletproof plant can take
a lot of neglect and absolutely flourish.
Drought Tolerant
Suitable for Xeriscaping
Very big and thick leaves, super color.
Note pencil in each photo to help indicate size.
For sale is a rooted leaf specimen or root-division
leaf-pup taken from the strong and healthy 'mother'
plants in my collection as shown in the photos above.
Leaf length and width may vary from what's pictured.
Please note well: fully-grown plants with large
rootballs already filling large planters as mature
showpiece specimens are not what is described
& sold in this listing. What is on offer here is a
starter leaf pup : rooted propagation stock —
strong healthy starter material for cultivating
this species, a great beginning for growing
out a nice beautiful specimen over time.
Sorry, please understand that special requests regarding specific specimens
or length cannot be accommodated. This is of course a living product of nature
with natural variation. At a guaranteed minimum you will receive at least one good
strong leaf with starter roots ready for planting. Like most arid environment plants,
Sansevieria masoniana has evolved to abandon its roots during long periods of
drought, concentrating its sustenance in the succulent leaves and underground
stolons. Your specimen may or may not have extensive root material, though
it will have root buds from which new roots will form and grow once planted.

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
For sale are 2 gradations of cosmetic visual perfection:
Both are in super healthy, prime physical condition.
Very Pretty” means a specimen that is more or less visually
spotless as far as natural plant matter goes, and pristine.
Minor Visual Imperfections” means there might be a small healed-
over scratch or two on the leaf, or perhaps a bit of normal brown leaf-
drying at the tip, that sort of thing. There's no disease of any kind, just
normal, perfectly healthy plants that may have taken a physical nick in
the course of their planting and growing : purely cosmetic visuals that
won’t affect the plant’s health in any way whatsoever. Gardeners and
horticulturists who know how the natural world works, look for healthy
genetic stock above all else. They know a small blemish on a leaf, the
healed scar of a tiny abrasion or so, will not affect the health of all the
beautiful new growth the plants will produce. This variation is for such
people — who, as in the words of the classic Joni Mitchell song, don’t
mind an apple's spot for the sake of the birds, bees and healthy trees.
Either variation is a great way to get a fantastic
bargain on a nice, super healthy plant specimen.
Please choose carefully then, from the variations on offer
in this listing according to your own needs and preference.
