This beautiful black clay pottery is called Barro Negro and
comes from Oaxaca, Mexico. This type of pottery is centuries old dating back to
8th century BC during the Monte Alban period. It was used primarily
for utilitarian purposes and had a matte grayish finish which was incredibly
strong and could be struck without breakage. Then in the 1950s a potter by the
name of Dona Rosa created a process of polishing the black clay prior to firing
to give it a black almost metallic sheen. Although this process weakened the
pottery making it more easily breakable it opened a whole new outlet for
decorative wares and sculptures. Barro Negro pottery is one of the most popular
and appreciated pottery in Mexico. This set is comprised of a tray or platter
with a fish design etched into its surface, four mugs with a band design of
beautiful spirals, and a wooden whisk, which is a piece of art of its own. These
are all fabulous examples of the barro negro pottery form Oaxaca, Mexico! And,
of the Mexican hot chocolate tradition. You need to make this set yours!
