Vintage Ceremonial Brocade Kake-Fukusa in Paulownia Box Kyoto Nishijin

This type of Fukusa is used for presenting something of value in ceremonies in Japan much like the ‘Ring Pillow’ used in Western weddings. In Japan, this may be used to display sacred objects on a table or counter.

It is made of silk Nishijin Suzure-Ori brocade depicting an old man and woman (representing longevity) on one side and a large golden Kotobuki  character on the other. It is sewn like an unstuffed cushion and has stiff gold tassels on the corners woven into tortoises which also represent a long life. It has probably never been used and is in perfect condition in its original kiri-wood box.

It measures a: 12 X 13" Square (31cm X 33cm)

MADE IN JAPAN
