Japanese Urushi-Ware Hananuri Black Lacquer Set of 3 Matching Nesting Bowls with Original Box
Set of three nesting bowls by Hananuri in Wajima Japan called Urushi-Ware. Made from the sap of the Urushi tree, which grows in Wajima Japan, when dried makes it strong and durable, and waterproof. They've been making lacquerware since the 16th century. Urushi-ware is known for producing black and red lacquerware. Layer after layer of this sap with each layer sanded and polished produces an exquisite work of art. These three bowls are simple, elegant, and beautiful. They fit one inside the other. The smallest (tea cup) measures 3" diameter x 2 1/4"H, holds 5 ounces. Medium bowl (soup bowl) measures 4 1/4" diameter x 3" H and holds 10 ounces. The large bowl (rice serving bowl) measures 5" Diameter x 3 7/8" H, and holds 3 cups. Age is unknown. The original box is included which is well worn, scuffs and soiling. A pamphlet is also included. These bowls are in very good vintage condition with no flaws.
