TEL AVIV JUBILEE
This stamp was issued in celebration of Tel Aviv's jubilee year, 1959. It depicts four of the outstanding public buildings constructed in the city since its founding in 1909, thus emphasizing their historical importance in the modern development of Tel Aviv. In the forefront is the old building of the city's first school, the Herzliyyah Gymnasium. The school was initially opened in Yafo in 1906 but in 1909 the cornerstone of a new building was set in the Tel Aviv neighborhood of Ahuzat Bayit. This building was brought down in 1962, however, and in its place the Shalom Tower was constructed.
Behind the Herzliyyah Gymnasium is depicted the Great Synagogue on Allenby Street, built in 1922. In the 1960s this building underwent extensive architectural facelifts. Next is the Mann Auditorium, which is the home of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the largest concert hall in the country. The fourth building on the stamp is the Histadrut building on Arlozorov Street, which is home of the central Histadrut offices.
The stamp's tab reads: "Again I will build thee, and thou shalt be built...".
