DE VICTORIA ANTIPHONARY SHEETS
Tomas Luis
de Victoria (1548-1611) Famed Renaissance composer from Spain.
Considered one of the most important composers of the
Counter-Reformation and of sacred music. Victoria was ordained as a
priest at Loyala's monestary, but spent the majority of his career
serving the Empress Maria of Spain. One of Victoria's most treasured
works is the Officium Hebdomadae Sanctae, a collection of
music written for the Holy Week liturgy and played at the Sistine
Chapel, to which this lot pertains. Rare 13"x11"
Illuminated musical manuscript sheet, 1p. Vellum, a section of the
"Hebdomadae", specifically a part of the "Jesum
Tradidit Impius", The Jesum Tradidit Impius
sets the Passion of Mathew to music, and is considered the highlight
of Victoria's composition. The sheet contains the line, "{addu}
xerunt aute' eum ad caipa' principem sacerdotum ubi scribe et
pharisei conve {nerant}", which translates to, "And
they led him to Caiphas the high priest, where the Scribes and
Pharisees were met together". The
sheet appears to have been finely sliced from an antiphonery book
given the roman numeral page number at the upper right corner and the
slight chafing at the margin. While
unlikely that this sheet was penned by Victoria himself, the Yale
conservation department has confirmed the time period as late 16th
century, making
it most probably
a contemporary copy from a European church or monestary.
Included
with the lot is an illuminated musical manuscript page reciting
"Gloria Patri"
Both are slightly toned with evidence of foxing and iron
ink pinholes, else fine.
A superb addition for any collector of sacred
Renaissance music.
