Vintage Miniature Art Deco Sterling Silver & Guilloche Octagonal Rouge Compact/Pendant With Sterling Silver Chain
CHARMANT SPECIALITY COMPANY, LONG ISLAND CITY, NEW YORK, WAS A MINOR MANUFACTURER OF FACE POWDER AND ROUGE IN COMPACT FORM. IT WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1912 BY SAUL ABRAHAMS. THE COMPANY SOLD POWDER REFILLS USING THE BRAND NAME 'BUNNE' BUT REFERENCE TO THE COMPANY IS MOST OFTEN SEEN WITH THE WORD 'CHARMANT' APPEARING ON POWDER COMPACT PAPER COVERS, ON THE BASE OF COMPACT REFILLS OR ON PUFFS. CHARMANT DID MARKET A FEW COMPACT CASES IN ITS OWN RIGHT - ALL MARKED 'CHARMANT', BUT THESE ARE HARD TO FIND. THE COMPANY CEASED OPERATIONS IN ABOUT 1929.
SOURCE: 'COLLECTING VINTAGE COMPACTS'.
Marked 'Sterling' on the base of compact. '925' is marked on the snake chain.
The round removable metal base the rouge sits in has 'Charmant Inc. L.I. City NY Rosebud BA 800' on its base.
Hinge and clasp work perfectly. The puff is used but in very good condition. The caked rouge is in broken pieces. There are tarnish and scratches to the sterling silver as well as some spots. A few pin point black spots on guilloche insert.
The compact measures 27mm wide X 30mm at widest point X 5mm deep. 17mm diameter is the guilloche insert.
The snake chain measures 46mm long.
