Tom began painting for his own enjoyment in the 1980s and his watercolours of the North-East coastline, Yorkshire and the Cotswolds quickly found a ready market amongst his friends. His unmistakable style and exquisite attention to detail have made his compositions extremely popular over the years and his work has been exhibited at the Laing Art Gallery, the Hatton Gallery and the University of Northumbria Gallery.

In the 1990s, a business partnership was formed with his son Gavin and prints from his watercolours were successfully marketed and sold. Many of his original views are eminently collectable and have been reproduced as the Mac Donald Collection of prints and greeting cards.

Tom passed away in April 2011 but his legacy in distinctive watercolours and prints continues to increase in popularity.
