This is a 1962 first English-language edition of Marc Chagall’s The Jerusalem Windows, the landmark monograph documenting the twelve stained-glass windows he created for the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center synagogue in Jerusalem. Text and notes by Jean Leymarie, translated from the French by Elaine Desautels. Published by George Braziller, Inc. in association with Horizon Magazine; printed in France.
This one comes with:
Not included: Dust jacket and publisher’s slipcase (neither is present).
Condition notes: The red cloth binding looks clean and solid overall from the photos, with the gilt lettering on the front board and spine intact and but with wear. Spine is straight and the binding appears tight. Interior pages (including the title page with one of the original lithographs, copyright page, and table of contents) look crisp and unmarked. The original lithographs appear bright and well-preserved. No dust jacket or slipcase.
Fun fact: Chagall was nearly 70 when he began the project after the 1959 commission; the windows were briefly exhibited in Paris and New York before their permanent installation in the Jerusalem synagogue in 1962.
