| . | Photos above always show the actual item you will get from me, because I never use "stock photos." For much sharper photos of the front and back of this slabbed comic, go to CGCcomics to see its Verified Certification page. You do not have to be a CGC member to use this service. Somehow, CGC manages to photograph slabs with no glare or reflections, like magic! Simply go to CGCcomics, click the "Resources" pull-down menu, click "Verify CGC Certification," and then enter the "Cert Number" shown on the label in the photo above: 4657286001. You even can click the two CGC pix there to enlarge them! Note that the Item Condition designation "Very Good" above refers to the comic book itself, with more details below. The outer CGC clear plastic slab in which it is encased, however, is in brand new, perfect condition, and comes with the clear plastic "bag" sleeve in which it was sent. This book was graded by CGC in October 2025. There are two reasons why this copy is a real rarity: First, this CGC graded 7.0 (with White Pages) copy of issue 1 of the Marvel Comics "Conan the Barbarian" 1970 comic book series is SIGNED by both writer Roy Thomas and artist Barry Smith (known these days as Barry Windsor-Smith). Second, this is one of only four copies of this issue ever graded by CGC that have both Roy's and Barry's authenticated signatures (as of January 2026). That's right: There are only four CGC-graded copies in existence in the entire universe with both autographs! You can confirm this by going to CGCComics, clicking the "Resources" pull-down menu, clicking "Verify CGC Certification," entering the "Cert Number" 4657286001, and then going down to click the "Total Graded by CGC" link that is to the right of the two thumbnail images at the bottom of that page. The page that pops up next shows there are only three copies signed by both Smith (as "Barry Smith") and Thomas ever graded by CGC (see screenshot above of that page): one in 7.5 condition, and two in 7.0 (one of which is the copy in this auction). Note that there also is a "CGC Signature Series" copy you can find elsewhere on the site that includes signatures from Barry (as "Barry Windsor-Smith"), Roy Thomas and Stan Lee. I'm pretty sure I got these signatures in 1974 at the Phil Seuling comic con in New York. (Yes, I am ancient.) What I remember for sure is that I definitely got both of the signatures at the same con. Not realizing that more than half a century later it would have made more sense to get the signatures on the cover instead of the splash page ("D'oh!"), I had both Roy and Barry sign on page one. Which means the only way to see their sigs now would be by cracking open the slab. Fortunately, I took photos of the cover and the splash page (see above) before sending this book off to CGC -- so you can see exactly what the signatures inside look like without cracking the case! Grading details: 7.0 (but looks a lot better to me -- which I'm sure is what everyone says who sends books off to be graded) with White Pages. Both signatures have been authenticated as genuine by CGC's Autograph Authentication JSA experts, as noted on the label. And here are CGC's complete verbatim Grader Notes: "Barry Smith autograph deemed authentic by JSA on page 1. Roy Thomas autograph deemed authentic by JSA on page 1. light finger bends cover wear all corners front cover breaks color light, multiple crease cover breaks color" You'll love it! Any questions, just ask! (Note: I have other signed and unsigned CGC-graded comics listed as separate auctions on eBay right now, so be sure to check them out!) Well-protected shipping in a sturdy box with tracking and insurance to any US address will be a flat $20.00 per CGC comic or magazine, no matter how high the selling price. Combined shipping for any two or more of my CGC auctions will be a flat $25.00 for US bidders, no matter how many of them you win! Win two auctions, pay $25.00 shipping. Win 10, still pay only $25.00 shipping. What a deal! Important Note: If you do win more than one auction, do not pay the individual invoices eBay automatically sends, which will not show the combined discount. Instead, let me know, and I will send a revised, lower invoice. International shipping will be higher (probably MUCH higher), and only through eBay's Global Shipping Program. EBay sets the prices for international shipments -- I only get the same amount a US winner would pay -- so I have no control over what the international shipping price will be. |
