2.67 gram piece of Vaca Muerta A1 a rare stony-iron mesosiderite meteorite that was recoverd in Chile's Atacama Desert in 1861. Prospectors found the meteorite while hunting for gold and silver.  However, the find lay virtually lost until 1985 when the original strewn field was rediscovered.  Vaca's A1 classification stems from equal mix of nickel-iron and other silicate rock fragments.  Mesosiderites are believed to have formed when collisions between metal-rich and silicate-rich asteroids possibly linked to the asteroid Vesta.  This rare meteorite piece has a single lightly polished surface and measures approximately 10mm x 17mm x 6mm and may be found mentioned in the "NHM catalogue " #5 (2000).  A display case is included with your purchase.
