Vintage 8" x 10" black-and-white photographic print showing the riverboat COLORADO, believed to date from approximately 1929.
Excellent broadside view of the vessel showing the large stern paddlewheel, multi-level superstructure, smokestack, crew figures, and boom/derrick equipment. The name COLORADO is clearly visible on the stern.
The image is associated with Chicago, Burlington & Quincy / Burlington Route railroad archival material and carries an archival stamp on the reverse that includes a ZIP code. Because ZIP codes were not introduced until the 1960s, the stamp represents a later archival or collection marking and should not be interpreted as the date the photograph was printed.
Despite the later archive stamp, the physical photograph itself displays characteristics consistent with an earlier vintage photographic printing, including the paper, surface, tonal quality, borders, and general construction of the print. It therefore appears likely that the photograph was printed substantially earlier than the archive stamp was applied, although the exact printing date cannot be confirmed.
The underlying image is believed to date to approximately 1929, and a photographic reference/negative number is visible within the image. This may have been a railroad, industrial, publicity, or historical reference photograph retained in a larger transportation archive.
Details include:
Condition is consistent with an older archival photograph and includes edge and corner wear, including loss at the upper-left corner, along with normal handling and storage wear. Please review all photographs carefully for exact condition.
An appealing historical image for collectors of CB&Q, Burlington Route, railroad archives, Mississippi River transportation, sternwheelers, steamboats, riverboats, maritime history, industrial photography, and vintage transportation photographs.
