I. Designer, House, Maker Origin & Historical Profile

Tyber is the trading name attached to the Belgian textile company Tyber—Anciens Établissements Gustave Tyberghein. The registry-based company record gives 9 May 1946 as the legal creation date; a branch at 311 Ieperstraat, Menen, carried textile weaving as its registered activity under enterprise number 0405.518.891. These facts establish Tyber as a Belgian mill identity and locate its textile manufacture in Menen, but they do not identify a clothing designer or sewing factory. The sewn label reads “TYBER” above “PILE ACRYLIC AND MODACRYLIC,” followed by care symbols. Its wording assigns Tyber to the pile and records the two fibre classes only for that surface; it does not state blend percentages, backing composition, lining composition, garment manufacture, or country of assembly. The object therefore retains Tyber as textile producer and records the garment designer and sewing manufacturer as unknown. English-language wording establishes an English-reading audience for the label, but it cannot by itself locate the sales market or sewing operation.

II. Brand Heritage, Fashion-Historical Position & Industry Influence

Tyber’s documented role was business-to-business textile supply. In 1995 Women’s Wear Daily described it as a Belgium-based fake-fur fabric house and reported that St. John served as its United States agent while licensing an eleven-piece coat line in Tyber fabrics; the reported shapes included shawl-collar and trapeze coats simulating mink, beaver, and other furs. This later evidence cannot date the present coat, yet it confirms the division visible in the label hierarchy: Tyber could provide the pile, while another firm designed, cut, assembled, licensed, or retailed the garment. By 2006 trade reporting described Tyber as a Belgian producer of woven synthetic fur and technical textiles and recorded its acquisition of the French pile manufacturer Tissavel. A later industry directory characterized the Menen facility as vertically equipped for spinning, weaving, and finishing, with pile heights made for technical uses. Those later records document continuing competence in woven pile and a reach beyond clothing; they do not establish the exact loom, finishing line, or blend used for this earlier coat. The supportable industry position is thus a mill supplying raised-surface textiles into garment manufacture, not a fashion house with evidenced authorship of the coat’s cut. III. Garment Classification & Design Intent

The object is a long swing-cut fashion overcoat: it is sleeved, front-opening, lined, pocketed, and patterned without waist suppression, with circumference increasing below the shoulder line. It is not a cape, because the arms are contained in sleeves; not a trench coat, because it has no storm system, belt, double-breasted fastening, or rainwear textile; and not a parka, because it lacks a hood, drawcords, or insulated shell construction. “Car coat” would understate its length, while “opera coat” would assign an evening-only function not established by the surviving evidence. The safest subtype is swing coat, qualified as a fashion overcoat and, in social-use discussion, as a probable winter daywear dress coat.

Its design problem is to obtain warmth, coverage, and fur-like display from a textile with a substantial raised face while permitting layered movement. Suspension from the shoulders leaves the torso free of close shaping, and the hem expansion gives stride and seated ease. Broad sleeves accept knitwear or a dress sleeve; concealed hooks close the center front without interrupting the simulation; slash pockets provide hand warming and modest carrying capacity. Historical retail gender is not stated on the object. The proportions and dress-coat convention suggest probable women’s fashion outerwear, but that market classification is not documented.

IV. Construction Methodology & Engineering

The coat is a cut-and-sew assembly of pile textile, lining, narrow binding or tape, and metal hook components. A probable production sequence began with one-way placement of the principal shell pieces so that the nap fell consistently downward. The pile would have been cut from the backing side, with loose fibres removed and seam lines cleared; fronts and back were then joined, pockets inserted, sleeves closed and mounted, and the collar/front-facing system assembled. After hook components and localized supports were secured to the backing, the russet lining was joined as a separate shell, attached around the facing and neckline, and closed through a concealed turning opening.

Pile bulk changes ordinary sewing operations. Seam allowances must remain narrow enough to avoid ridges yet broad enough to hold the backing, and trapped pile must be released from the seam after stitching so that joins disappear on the face. The collar requires extra turn allowance because its upper surface travels farther around the roll than its underside. Pressing would have been minimal and indirect: heat and pressure can flatten or distort the acrylic-family face, so shaping depended chiefly on pattern, seam control, and hand manipulation. The likely seam family is plain machine joining on the backing with clean enclosure by the lining; the covered interior prevents a stronger seam-class determination.

The front closes with concealed fur-hook hardware; at least one blackened metal hook component survives behind the pile edge. The fastening keeps the two pile fields closely abutted while avoiding visible buttonholes, and it permits local opening from the neck or hem. The hook’s coated finish shows minor surface loss, useful evidence of repeated manipulation, while the surrounding pile conceals the functional plate when worn.

Two vertical slash pockets interrupt the lower fronts. Their openings are stabilized with narrow russet ribbed binding, visually tied to the lining, and set nearly parallel to the center front. This placement supplies hand access without a projecting flap or patch that would break the mink-simulation surface. The sleeves are broad and tubular with mild expansion toward the open cuffs; no cuff fastening contracts them. VI. Nomenclature and Historical Drift

“Swing coat” names a coat whose volume hangs from the shoulder area and moves freely around the body, generally with little or no waist suppression and an enlarging lower circumference. Fashion Institute of Technology material records a “Swing Coat with Brown Fur Cuffs and Brown Hat” for fall/winter 1938, while The Metropolitan Museum of Art identifies Charles James’s 1951 wool coat, object 2013.367, as a traditional swing coat with an asymmetrical collar. The present coat retains the shoulder suspension and mobile hem but simplifies the mid-century type into a symmetric collar, broad serially sewn panels, and a synthetic fur face. The relationship is a later revival and industrial adaptation, not a documented copy of either comparator. The second inherited type is the fur coat: a raised, light-responsive outer surface, concealed hook fastening, deep collar, and generous body designed to avoid crushing the face. The acrylic/modacrylic label excludes animal fur, so “mink coat” would be materially false. “Mink-simulation pile coat” identifies the specific visual operation without claiming species or pelt construction. Museum comparators show fur and synthetic fibre coexisting in 1970s fashion, including Kenzo’s 1971–75 jacket, object 1977.115.25, and fur coats by Donald Brooks in 1970, object 1972.157, and Marc Bohan for Dior around 1970, object 1980.488a, b. Period terminology varied among “fake fur,” “simulated fur,” “textile fur,” and the now common “faux fur.” The label avoids all four and instead records pile composition, a wording that treats the surface as textile technology. “Faux fur” remains useful as a general material family, while “acrylic-and-modacrylic mink-simulation pile” is the more exact catalogue term for this object. The label-confirmed statement is “PILE ACRYLIC AND MODACRYLIC.” It gives neither percentage nor the composition of the foundation. Acrylic and modacrylic are related but legally distinct manufactured fibres: under the United States Federal Trade Commission definitions, acrylic contains at least 85 percent acrylonitrile units, while modacrylic contains at least 35 percent and less than 85 percent. Those regulatory definitions explain the paired generic names but do not reveal their ratio in this pile. The face is a dense short- to medium-nap pile with fine, lustrous fibres lying in a directional field. Near-black fibres dominate, while warm dark-brown fibres emerge at the collar, front edge, folds, and brushed changes of direction. Tyber is independently documented as a producer of woven synthetic fur, so a woven pile foundation is probable; the backing itself is not exposed sufficiently to assign a precise pile-weave system or ground-fibre composition. The pile may combine different fibre populations or differently colored components, but no microscopic or destructive evidence supports a yarn-by-yarn allocation. The acrylic-family face supplies high cover at moderate mass, useful thermal air entrapment, spring after light compression, low moisture absorbency, and pronounced static attraction. Its luster is integral to the fur simulation: fibre orientation creates bright narrow reflections, while reversed or compressed nap appears brown or matte. Repeated pressure at collar, cuffs, pocket mouths, and seated zones can mat the pile; friction can roughen tips; heat can soften or deform the polymer surface. The blend’s modacrylic component is compatible with fur-like apparel applications, but no flame-performance claim can be made for the completed coat from fibre names alone. The lining is a russet, high-luster filament twill of probable regenerated-cellulose composition; acetate and viscose remain the leading candidates, and visual evidence does not separate them. Its diagonal structure and smooth face reduce friction over clothing, while its color provides a concealed warm counterfield at the neck and pockets. The label’s symbol row prohibits washing, bleaching, and ironing and permits professional dry-cleaning under the P system with a reduced-treatment bar. VIII. Construction & Pattern Analysis

The shell is organized around paired fronts, a back body, two sleeves, a continuous collar/facing system, pocket components, and a separate lining. Exact back-panel count remains unresolved because the dense pile masks internal seam paths, yet the uninterrupted lower field indicates large pieces with few visible style seams. The fronts are cut without waist darts, princess seams, a belt, or side-body suppression. Their side trajectories move outward below the upper torso, producing an A-line outline and a hem-dominant swing from pattern geometry, not from soft drape alone.

Volume originates at the shoulder and upper chest, remains generous through the torso, and increases toward the lower edge. The pile backing carries this drafted geometry with moderate stiffness; the raised face softens seam definition but does not generate the silhouette. Sleeves appear to be separately set into the body, although the pile prevents a more exact armscye reading. They maintain broad upper-arm and elbow allowance and open at wide cuffs, enabling rotation and flexion over layers without a vent or gusset.

One-way nap placement is essential. Reversing a principal panel would change both color and luster, so fronts, back, sleeves, collar, and visible pocket edges were probably cut to compatible directional readings. The collar is the controlled exception: turn of cloth changes its apparent nap angle when rolled, bringing brown highlights forward. The russet lining follows the shell at reduced dimensions, with ease required across the upper back and sleeves so that it does not suspend the coat or pull the hem upward.

IX. Structural Integrity & Panel Configuration

The main load path runs from the hem and dense pile through the body backing to the shoulder and neckline. The hanging loop concentrates the same mass at a small center-back area when used; prolonged suspension from it would stress the lining and neck seam more severely than a broad padded hanger. The collar distributes some edge weight around the neck, while the unwaisted body avoids a horizontal seam that might sag under the pile.

Front-hook strain enters the backing through small metal plates and their supports. The hook locations therefore form the most important closure stress points, followed by pocket-mouth corners, underarms, sleeve-head seams, and cuff edges. The lining carries little primary shell load but prevents abrasion between backing and underclothes and limits internal snagging. No broad structural failure is evident; minor coating loss on the hook and slight local pile displacement record repeated use.

Large shell panels reduce visible joins but make any local backing tear consequential because repair can disturb a broad nap field. A conservation repair would need to bridge the foundation from the reverse, retain the original seam line, and free pile from new stitches. Surface stitching through the face would leave needle tracks and compressed fibres, while excessive adhesive could stiffen the backing and create a permanent planar patch.

X. Edge Finishing, Seam Termination & Closures

External edges at collar, front, cuffs, and hem are turned or faced so that the backing does not remain exposed. The lining clean-finishes the interior perimeter and creates a bagged appearance at the front and lower edge. Dense pile obscures exact seam allowances, but the shell joins are consistent with machine-stitched plain seams whose allowances are concealed by the lining. There is no evidence for lapped pelt seams, raw leather edges, French seams, or bonded construction.

At the shawl-type collar, the top surface turns over a concealed neckline and facing seam; bulk control depends on grading or trimming the backing and keeping pile out of the stitch line. Pocket mouths terminate in reinforced corners beneath the narrow ribbed binding. Sleeve hems appear turned and lined without cuffs. The lower hem remains broad, its sweep controlled by the shell’s drafted circumference and the free-hanging lining.

The closure is a concealed fur-hook system, not a buttoned or zippered front. A metal hook engages a corresponding loop or eye across the opening while the pile overlaps or meets around the hardware. Repair is feasible if the original backing support survives; replacing a hook with heavier hardware, relocating it, or pulling the fronts into a tighter overlap would change closure balance and crush the nap along the center line.

XI. Edge Treatment, Wearability & Manufacturing Context

The finish system makes a bulky face wearable by moving rough backing, seam allowances, metal supports, and pocket bags behind a smooth lining. Wide sleeves and an unconstricted body reduce abrasion against layered clothing, while turned edges prevent the foundation from rubbing at neck, wrist, and hem. The open cuffs and swing body permit ventilation during movement, but the dense pile and long coverage retain a substantial envelope of warm air in still conditions.

Serial manufacture required pile-aware spreading, reverse-side cutting, one-way marker planning, controlled seam feeding, post-seam pile release, hook reinforcement, collar balancing, and careful lining insertion. One-way nap reduces marker nesting efficiency, and the broad fronts and back increase cloth consumption; the economy comes from a low component count and the absence of darts, buttonholes, visible topstitching, or external trim. The demanding quality checks are bilateral hem level, sleeve hang, collar roll, matched nap direction, invisible shell joins, and an even front meeting line.

This production system adapts two costlier historical forms—the swing coat and the fur coat—to woven-pile cut-and-sew. Shoulder-derived volume and a deep collar are retained; pelt matching, skin-specific blocking, and leather-seam work are replaced by marker cutting and machine joining of a stable textile foundation. Concealed hooks and released pile preserve the fur-coat exterior, while the symmetric body and reduced panel vocabulary suit repeat production. Tyber’s later documented supply of fake-fur fabric to licensed coat lines shows how mill, clothing producer, and marketer could remain distinct operations within such a system, though that later arrangement is only a business-model comparison for this earlier object. XII. Cultural Framing

The coat belongs most securely to cold-weather fashion dress, not technical protection. Its lining, pockets, broad collar, long coverage, and concealed fastening support urban daywear and entry into social interiors; absence of weatherproofing, hood, cuff seals, or hard-wearing shell limits rain, work, and alpine functions. The fur-simulation surface raises the visual register above an ordinary utility coat, making a winter daywear dress-coat role probable and evening use possible. No garment label or provenance assigns a gala, profession, subculture, or institutional dress code.

Synthetic fur carried more than one period meaning. It could imitate an expensive animal-fur surface at a different material and production cost, and by the early 1970s some manufacturers also connected it to animal-conservation arguments. Smithsonian Magazine records E. F. Timme & Son’s early-1970s campaign against animal fur, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art notes criticism of fur producers and consumers from animal-welfare groups beginning in that decade. Those sources define an adjacent public discourse; the present coat has no slogan, provenance, or maker statement proving an ethical purchase or design intent. The most defensible cultural constructions are therefore a soft-volume winter fashion coat, a probable day-to-evening dress coat, and a tactile statement outer layer. Career dressing is unsupported because no suit system, retailer, or professional use survives; gala glamour is too narrow because the pockets and enveloping cut serve ordinary winter movement; ski or resort classification fails for lack of protective engineering. These exclusions keep the interpretation at the scale of the material, form, and use system actually present.

XIII. Artistic & Aesthetic Direction

The whole-object composition begins with a broad shoulder span and descends in two slightly diverging outer contours toward a low, wide hem. The center front forms the principal vertical axis, but the closure nearly disappears, allowing the two fronts to read as one dark field. The collar makes a rounded countercurve around the neck and upper chest; sleeves create shorter lateral pendants, and the paired pocket slits introduce two narrow russet accents below the midpoint. Large uninterrupted planes dominate over small components, so proportion and surface carry the visual hierarchy.

Perception changes with pile direction. Near-black fibres absorb much of the incident light, while brown fibres and glossy tips appear as irregular bands when the nap bends around collar roll, sleeve, pocket, and front edge. These are not printed marks or fixed motifs: they emerge through fibre orientation, compression, and movement. Walking opens the lower fronts and shifts the hem into alternating concave and convex folds; each fold reverses the angle of reflection, making the coat’s tonal pattern mobile. The russet lining appears only at controlled breaches—neck, pocket mouth, and opening—so its warm color reads as interior depth instead of an exterior block.

This light-modulated simulation belongs to the period visual field of imitation-fur advertising and renewed fur display. A 1971 “Timme-Tation” campaign used celebrity advocacy to promote fake fur during an expanding conservation debate, while period museum holdings place fur and synthetic fibre together in fashion objects such as Kenzo’s 1971–75 jacket, object 1977.115.25. Marc Bohan’s Dior fur coat of about 1970, object 1980.488a, b, demonstrates how animal pattern and surface kinetics could themselves become the principal graphic event of a coat. The Tyber piece reaches a different effect through tonal nap without an animal print; the relationship is period adjacency in surface-led outerwear, not documented influence. Its cultural register joins the mobile, body-independent volume of the swing coat to the dark luster and concealment conventions of the fur coat. It offers visual abundance through fibre density and reflected light, without embroidery, print, or exposed hardware. The simple panel system keeps the viewer’s attention on changes produced by walking, turning, opening the front, and raising the collar. The resulting aesthetic thesis is specific: an industrial synthetic pile turns a symmetric swing-cut shell into a moving tonal field, linking a mid-century coat revival to the imitation-fur visual culture of 1970–1979.

XIV. Historical Placement & Contextual Analysis

Dating evidence forms a hierarchy. The care symbols establish manufacture after their 1963 introduction; Tyber’s 1946 company creation sets only a much earlier corporate floor. The strongest stylistic evidence is the unwaisted long swing body, deep fur-like collar, concealed hook front, dark mink simulation, synthetic pile composition, russet lining, and graphic woven label. Secure museum comparators place fur and synthetic-fibre outerwear in 1970–75, while Smithsonian Magazine documents imitation-fur conservation advertising in 1971. None of these provides an exact model year, but their convergence centers the object in the 1970s. Origin must be separated by production stage. A Belgian-assembly hypothesis is supported by the Menen mill identity and the possibility of local conversion, but contradicted by the absence of a Belgian country statement, bilingual national labeling, or a clothing manufacturer. An export-supply hypothesis is supported by English composition wording and by Tyber’s later documented use of a United States fabric agent; it still does not identify the earlier coat’s market or where it was cut and sewn. The narrowest conclusion is pile supplied by Belgian Tyber, with garment assembly and retail destination unresolved. The coat is archival evidence for the division of responsibility in synthetic-fur outerwear: a material supplier could be named prominently because pile identity mattered to sale and care, while garment authorship remained outside the surviving label. Its broad date can be narrowed no further without measurements tied to a pattern, dated retail documentation, a production code, or a clothing-maker label. The four-symbol care row remains compatible with the decade but has a longer use span, and coat silhouettes cross year boundaries. A shorter interval would create false precision. The explicit central date estimate is 1970–1979.

XV. Use Case

The coat was intended to be put on over a dress, suit, skirt-and-knit combination, or similarly layered indoor clothing, then fastened at the front with concealed hooks. Its broad torso does not require precise waist alignment, and the collar can lie open or be raised partly around the neck. The vertical pockets accept hands and small soft objects, though their narrow mouths and pile foundation are unsuited to heavy loads.
