On 21 June, Yamal scored his first World Cup goal as Spain defeated Saudi Arabia 4–0 in the group stage, becoming the second player aged 18 or younger to score the opening goal in a World Cup match since Pelé in 1958. He was named Man of the Match in Spain's 3–0 round of 32 win against Austria and its 2–1 quarter-final win against Belgium.
