CONDITION:  FAIR TO GOOD; thick book lacking dust jacket, with considerable shelfwear.  Most pages are properly bound, although a few are loose, though still present.

The original 1904 printing is a 585-page hardcover. It is typically bound in a distinct red cloth with ruled lines, a stamped logo on the front cover, and bright gilt lettering on the spine.

The author was a foundational pioneer of detective fiction. His brilliant detective character, Monsieur Lecoq, heavily influenced Arthur Conan Doyle's creation of Sherlock Holmes.

The story shifts back to the year 1815 right after the fall of Napoleon, exploring a turbulent period of political unrest, shifting loyalties, and bitter family rivalries in the French village of Sairmeuse. It provides the vital back-story, family secrets, and motives that drive the intricate criminal investigation handled by Inspector Lecoq in the first volume.

This is the second volume/sequel to Gaboriau’s masterpiece, Monsieur Lecoq.
