Vintage Japanese Kogo box  !

* Dimensions, Approx.: ... 2.5" W x 1" H x 2.5" L ... 

* Likely it is from Early to mid-20th century (Shōwa period). It represents a beautifully aged example of Japanese wabi-sabi utility ware.

* Material: It is carved from bamboo root (takenoko / chiku-kon), a highly prized and difficult material to work with due to its density and irregular shape.

Aesthetic Details: The dimpled, textured top and inner base showcase the natural, organic growth rings and nodes of the root. The sides reveal the fine fiber grain of the bamboo stalk.

Finish: The glossy sheen comes from 摺漆 (Surishi-urushi), a traditional lacquering technique where clear or amber Urushi lacquer is rubbed repeatedly into the natural wood to highlight the intricate fiber pattern while protecting it from moisture.

Function: Within the Japanese Tea Ceremony (Chanoyu), a miniature lidded box of this specific shape and scale is used strictly as a Kōgō to elegantly present incense pellets to guests before lighting the hearth.

* There are 3 cracks on the side of the lid. The small, linear cracks are completely normal features for aged bamboo root. Because the root node naturally holds significant internal tension, it often develops slight hairline splits as the organic material dries over decades.
