Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku

This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features two white, black, and red cranes beside a pine tree. A red rising sun appears in the background. This piece is signed with a name and a red seal. Cranes, or tsuru in Japanese, symbolize longevity in Japan.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has become part of Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used in the tokonoma of a tatami room. Chakake features Zen words and is used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
