ABOUT THIS PHOTO
Yutte Stensgaard appears as Mircalla Karnstein in a striking alternate image from the blood-drenched resurrection sequence in Hammer Films’ Lust for a Vampire (1971). This companion photograph captures a distinctly different expression from the preceding image. Stensgaard’s head is raised and her mouth open as theatrical blood streams across her neck and body, giving the photograph a more animated and dramatic quality. The more frontal composition also reveals the blood-stained pale drapery gathered across her lap against the dark Gothic stone setting.
The combination of Mircalla’s intense expression, vivid theatrical blood and stark Hammer styling makes this an especially memorable image for collectors of Yutte Stensgaard, Hammer Horror, vampire cinema and the Karnstein trilogy.
Lust for a Vampire
Directed by Jimmy Sangster from a screenplay by Tudor Gates, Lust for a Vampire (1971) stars Yutte Stensgaard as Mircalla Herritzen / Carmilla Karnstein alongside Michael Johnson, Ralph Bates, Suzanna Leigh and Barbara Jefford.
The film follows the resurrection of Mircalla and her arrival at a nearby girls’ finishing school, where her presence becomes associated with seduction, obsession and a succession of mysterious deaths. Stensgaard’s combination of beauty and supernatural menace helped make Mircalla one of the defining images of Hammer’s early-1970s vampire films.
Lust for a Vampire forms the middle chapter of Hammer’s Karnstein trilogy, following The Vampire Lovers (1970) and preceding Twins of Evil (1971), continuing Hammer’s interpretation of characters originating in Sheridan Le Fanu’s classic vampire story Carmilla.
