Beautiful matching pair of vintage Japanese four-panel Byobu folding screens, featuring hand-painted floral compositions on a gold-tone/gold-leaf style ground.

Each screen features a different but complementary botanical scene with chrysanthemums, morning glories, bamboo and other flowers and foliage in blue, pink, white, red and green.

Both screens are signed and sealed by the artist and appear to have been created as a companion pair.

Traditional-style construction includes:

• Black lacquer-style frames
• Patterned paper backing
• Artist signatures and seals

19” high × 44–45” wide when fully opened.

CONDITION

These are vintage pieces with visible age and condition issues.

Both screens have areas of water staining/discoloration (at first look I thought it was bamboo) on the gold ground. There is additional spotting, surface wear, rubbing and age-related discoloration. The patterned backs also have areas of damage/wear, including tears/losses.

The floral paintings remain colorful and striking, and the pair displays beautifully despite the age-related condition.

No cleaning, touch-up or restoration has been attempted.
