A substantial Victorian solid sterling silver vesta case, made by Minshull & Latimer of Vyse Street, Birmingham and clearly hallmarked for Birmingham 1893. Unlike more heavily decorated examples, this handsome vesta has a plain polished body with softly rounded corners and an elegant curved back, giving it a wonderfully understated late-Victorian appearance.

The case has a pleasingly substantial 26.9 gram silver weight and retains its attractive gilt-lined interior. The hinged lid operates well with a good, flush closure, while the original match striker is incorporated into the underside. The hallmarks remain particularly crisp and legible. In good used antique condition for its 133 years, with the expected light surface marks, scratches and signs of use that give the plain silver body plenty of period character.

🔸 Measures 4.8cm x 4cm x 1cm - weight 26.9g approx.

Antique sterling silver vesta cases are highly collectable, admired for their craftsmanship, history, and timeless appeal. Originally designed to safely carry wax matches in the days before disposable lighters, they remain perfectly usable today for storing matches or can simply be enjoyed as elegant pocket-sized keepsakes. Crafted by skilled English silversmiths, each vesta case was carefully shaped from sterling silver and often finished with intricate hand-engraved decoration, reflecting the artistry and attention to detail that made these everyday objects both practical and beautiful. Today, they are treasured by collectors, silver enthusiasts, and those who appreciate fine antique craftsmanship.
