A rare 19th‑century Japanese diplomatic calling card belonging to Take’no Ouchi Shimodzuke-no Kami, titled:

“Envoy Extraordinary & Minister Plenipotentiary of H.M. the Tycoon of Japan.”

Cards of this type were used during the late Tokugawa Shogunate period, when Japan adopted the term “Tycoon” for foreign diplomacy (1850s–1860s). The card features elegant English script alongside Japanese characters, with the handwritten mark “P.P.C.” (a period abbreviation meaning Pour Prendre Congé — “to take leave”).
