In September 1978 Continental Air Lines was granted a Honolulu - Guam / Okinawa – Taiwan segment as the result of Civil Aeronautics Board concern with the limited service being provided by Pan American Airways to Guam, the important United States base in the western Pacific. Service was inaugurated on November 1, 1978.

This cover was carried on the inaugural Foreign Air Mail Route 46 flight from Honolulu, Hawaii to Taipei, Taiwan (where it was backstamped) and is listed in the Foreign Air Mail Flights (FAM) section of The American Air Mail Catalogue as F46-45.

Continental Airlines and United Airlines merged in an $8.5 billion all-stock merger of equals on October 1, 2010.
