A little history:

Headquartered in Ridgway, Pennsylvania, the Elk Tanning Company was formed in the 1890s by local attorney Calvin McCauley.

It consolidated regional tanneries—such as those in Ridgway and Wilcox—relying on local hemlock bark.

It later merged into the United States Leather Company, driving Ridgway’s historic boom.

Roots of the Industry Early tanneries:

Oscar B. Grant opened a major successful tannery in Ridgway in 1867 at Aylsworth Run and the Clarion River.

Abundant hemlock:

Dense regional forests provided massive amounts of hemlock bark, which was essential for processing heavy sole leather.

The mastermind:

Prominent Ridgway attorney Calvin McCauley bought local operations like the Grant and Eagle Valley tanneries.

Growth and Consolidation Formation:

McCauley organized these regional processing sites into the Elk Tanning Company, establishing its corporate headquarters in Ridgway.

U.S. Leather merger:

The firm sold out to the United States Leather Company, which grew into one of the nation's ten largest corporations and the world's leading producer of sole leather.

Economic boom:

The immense wealth generated by the lumber and tanning trades gave Ridgway one of the highest numbers of millionaires per-capita in the U.S. during the early 1900s.

Decline Deforestation:

Decades of aggressive logging stripped the surrounding hillsides of hemlock trees, starving the tanneries of local bark.

Closure:

Operations across the county (including satellite bark-pegging towns like Instanter) permanently wound down and closed by the 1920s.

There are no chips or cracks.

Sadly, there is an internal crack in the neck. There is no glass loss and still displays well.

Additional cleaning is always suggested.
