2 Antique Mother of Pearl Workbox Spools / Reels English * Circa 1850 The tops of these lovely matching Victorian spool holders are carved of mother of pearl with layered, floral centers and pierced, scalloped edges. The bottoms are cow (bovine) bone* and the brass shanks pull apart to allow balls of thread to be slipped on. The condition of both is excellent with no chips, cracks or other damage. They measure 1 1/4" high and the tops are 1 1/8" in diameter. English work boxes with similar mother of pearl topped reels are shown on pp. 33-40 of Gay Ann Rogers' excellent book An Illustrated History of Needlework Tools. *These items are made of bone from a domestic cow (bovine) and NOT from an endangered species or an ivory producing species.
