From a collection of cdv's of Royal Navy officers, mostly serving on HMS Devastation (launched 1871) which was the world's first mastless ocean-going ironclad warship. It relied entirely on steam power rather than sails. It revolutionised naval warfare by placing its main guns in rotating turrets, creating the blueprint for all modern 20th-century battleships
