The Reverend John Milner (1822–1897) served as the official Ship's Chaplain aboard the Royal Navy wooden screw frigate HMS Galatea.

He served on the ship during its high-profile global circumnavigation between 1867 and 1868.

The ship was commanded by Queen Victoria's second son, Prince Alfred, the Duke of Edinburgh. This historic cruise marked the very first royal visit to Australia. 

Alongside the prominent marine artist Sir Oswald Brierly, Reverend Milner meticulously recorded the journey. Upon their return, they published the official account titled The Cruise of HMS Galatea. His diaries and chronicles provide first-hand accounts of unique events, including an elephant hunt in South Africa and the dramatic, sudden curtailment of the tour after an assassination attempt on Prince Alfred in Sydney.
