Mineral specimen of Green Apophyllite, a popular
collector's crystal often characterized by its translucent white to light green
color and distinct pyramidal shape.
Key Characteristics
- Crystal
Structure: These crystals typically form
in tetragonal shapes, often appearing as four-sided pyramids or
rectangular prisms with flat ends.
- Color: While
it can be colorless or white, this specimen has a pale green
center, which is caused by trace amounts of iron or inclusions
of other minerals like celadonite.
- Luster: It
has a pearly to vitreous (glassy) luster. If you tilt it in the
light, some surfaces may have a "shimmer" similar to the inside
of a seashell.
- Common
Origin: High-quality green apophyllite like this is most famously
mined in the Deccan Traps of India (near Pune and Mumbai), where
it often grows alongside other minerals like peach-colored Stilbite.
- Uses and
Significance
- Collecting: Because
of its aesthetic "geometric" look and high transparency, it is a
staple in mineral collections.
- Metaphysical: In
crystal healing circles, Apophyllite is often associated with
"clearing the mind" and is frequently used during meditation to
stimulate the "third eye" and "heart" chakras
