During 1944, when the prospects of the Third Reich became more and more
grim, Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring ordered Junkers and Messerschmitt to
develop a long range bomber, which would be able transport 4 tons of bombs. This
plane, known as "Bomber C" was to have a high max. speed too. The aim was to
reach civil/industrial/military targets deep within US and Soviet
territory.
Junkers was developing the Junkers Ju 287 then, which had jet engines
and forward swept wings and Junkers thought to have a solution for the "Bomber
C" with it.
In parallel, BMW was interested in the program also. So the
"Schnellbomber II" ("Fast Bomber II") was concieved. Building on the
"Schnellbomber I" (also available from BIRD MODELS), the BMW
engineers went forward with a quite radial concept:
Low mounted, forward swept wings and turbo-prop engines mounted on
forward canted pylons and contra-rotating propellers. The engines were to be BMW
109-028 turboprops (6,570 hp, project only). The arrangement was chosen in order
to give additional safety to the engines during belly up landings and to improve
the aerodynamics of the aircraft also.
In March 1945, the RLM (German Air Ministry) cancelled the "Bomber C"
project and only blueprints for the "Schnellbomber II" were done till
then.
