Gerard Mercator (1512-94) was the greatest and most influential of the early cartographers. He pioneered methods on surveying and map making which revolutionised cartography and geography during the sixteenth century. His maps were widely published both by his own family business and by other map publishers throughout the 16th, 17th and 18th century's and his map projection methodology remains in use today.
This map is from Mercator's Atlas, a German edition republished in 1623 by Henricus Hondius in Amsterdam.

Map area is in good condition for age, engravings are clear. Some browning and marks. Hand colouring.
