Crafted from authentic mulberry washi paper, this stencil showcases delicate floral patterns with leaves and stems, reflecting traditional Japanese artistry and technique.
Manufactured in Central Japan between the mid or late Edo period (circa 1860) and early Meiji era (circa 1900), this katagami stencil is composed of multiple layers of handmade mulberry washi paper, expertly laminated and waterproofed with persimmon tannin to ensure durability.
The stencil employs a resist dyeing method, where a special paste is applied through the katagami before the fabric is dyed, leaving distinct negative spaces in the resulting design that capture the intricate floral motifs.
