Rockabye Hamlet was an original Broadway musical with book, music, and lyrics by Cliff Jones, adapting Shakespeare’s Hamlet into a rock musical. Directed and choreographed by legendary Broadway director Gower Champion, with co-choreography by Tony Stevens, the production featured scenic design by Kert F. Lundell, costume design by Joseph G. Aulisi, lighting design by Jules Fisher, sound design by Abe Jacob, projections by Mark Ravitz, and musical direction by Gordon Lowry Harrell. It was produced by Lester Osterman Productions and Joseph Kipness, in association with Martin Richards, Victor D’Arc, and Marilyn Strauss.

The production opened at the Minskoff Theatre in New York on February 17, 1976, following 21 previews, and closed on February 21, 1976 after only 7 performances, making it one of Broadway’s most famous short-lived musicals.

The original Broadway cast starred Larry Marshall as Hamlet, Alan Weeks as Claudius, Beverly D’Angelo as Ophelia, Leata Galloway as Gertrude, Kim Milford as Laertes, Christopher Chadman as Rosencrantz, Winston DeWitt Hemsley as Guildenstern, Rory Dodd as Horatio, and featured Meat Loaf as the Priest—years before his rise to international rock superstardom.
