Rare original 14” x 22” Broadway window card for ROCKABYE HAMLET, one of Broadway’s most notorious short-lived musicals.

A rock-musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s HAMLET, ROCKABYE HAMLET opened at Broadway’s Minskoff Theatre on February 17, 1976. After 21 previews, it lasted just SEVEN regular performances, closing on February 21.

The musical featured book, music and lyrics by Cliff Jones and was directed and choreographed by legendary Broadway director Gower Champion. The original cast included Larry Marshall as Hamlet, Beverly D’Angelo as Ophelia, and Meat Loaf among the company.

The show’s wonderfully improbable concept — Shakespeare’s tragedy transformed into a 1970s rock concert — has helped ROCKABYE HAMLET become part of Broadway flop folklore decades after its extraordinarily brief run.

It also holds a special place in theatre history as one of the shows represented on the famous “Flop Wall” at Joe Allen Restaurant in New York’s Theatre District. Contemporary accounts specifically identify ROCKABYE HAMLET among the legendary Broadway failures displayed there.
