This first edition was published as a triple-decker with slate-grey cloth binding in 1881 having been serialised in Harper's New Monthly in both their European and North American editions. The spines are professionally rebacked and the endpapers replaced. Backstrips are toned but the boards are generally good with minor bumps to corners. Internally very clean. The custom made slipcase has toning and wear to the spine but the internal chemise wrap shows very little wear. A collectible copy.
