Alexander Findlay (c. 1790–1870) was a highly accomplished 19th-century London engraver, cartographer, and a founding fellow of the prestigious Royal Geographical Society (1830). Renowned for his crisp, elegant copperplate engraving and precise geographical accuracy, Findlay was the master craftsman commissioned to illustrate Christopher Kelly's landmark geography work in 1817. His beautifully detailed maps capturing the shifting borders and newly explored territories of the early 19th century became the defining feature of Kelly's celebrated work. As the patriarch of a legendary British map-making dynasty—his son, Alexander George Findlay, would later become one of Europe's premier hydrographers—the elder Findlay's early engravings are highly sought after today by collectors of authentic, fine-art antique cartography.
