Offered is an original Moulin Rouge! The Musical World Premiere window card promoting the show’s historic 2018 pre-Broadway engagement at Boston’s newly restored Emerson Colonial Theatre. Unlike the Broadway window cards issued after the transfer to New York, this piece commemorates the musical’s first public performances and its highly anticipated out-of-town tryout.

The design is striking and instantly recognizable, featuring the illuminated red marquee-style “Moulin Rouge!” logo against a dramatic Paris skyline with the iconic windmill and the production’s motto: “Truth • Beauty • Freedom • Love.” The lower portion prominently announces “World Premiere • Boston 2018” with credits for Book by John Logan and Directed by Alex Timbers.

Condition appears very good overall based on the photographs. Colors remain rich and vibrant with a clean display appearance. There is a light vertical handling crease visible near the upper center and minor edge wear consistent with careful storage. The reverse is blank.

PRODUCTION & HISTORICAL CONTEXT

This window card represents the World Premiere Boston tryout of Moulin Rouge! The Musical, which played at the Emerson Colonial Theatre in Boston, Massachusetts, from July 10 through August 19, 2018, following a brief delay caused by the theatre’s renovation. The engagement served as the production’s official pre-Broadway tryout before its transfer to New York in 2019.

The musical features a book by John Logan, based on Baz Luhrmann’s acclaimed 2001 film created by Baz Luhrmann and Craig Pearce. It was directed by Alex Timbers with choreography by Sonya Tayeh, scenic design by Derek McLane, costume design by Catherine Zuber, lighting design by Justin Townsend, sound design by Peter Hylenski, music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements by Justin Levine, and music direction by Matt Stine. The production was produced by Carmen Pavlovic and Gerry Ryan for Global Creatures.

The original Boston cast included Aaron Tveit as Christian, Karen Olivo as Satine, Danny Burstein as Harold Zidler, Sahr Ngaujah as Toulouse-Lautrec, Tam Mutu as The Duke of Monroth, Ricky Rojas as Santiago, and Robyn Hurder as Nini. The success of the Boston engagement led directly to the Broadway transfer, where the production opened at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on July 25, 2019, ultimately winning 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

WHY THIS IS A STRONG COLLECTOR PIECE

Collectors place a premium on pre-Broadway material documenting a musical before it reached Broadway. This window card captures the historic World Premiere Boston engagement, making it distinctly different from the more common Broadway issue.

It also commemorates the reopening of Boston’s legendary Emerson Colonial Theatre after its extensive restoration, adding another layer of theatrical history. Featuring the original creative team and Boston premiere billing, this piece appeals to collectors of Broadway memorabilia, Baz Luhrmann productions, Aaron Tveit, Karen Olivo, and Tony Award-winning musicals. The bold illuminated marquee artwork creates exceptional display value and has become one of the signature designs of modern Broadway advertising.
