Stanley Bailey No. 5 1/4 Type 19 plane with smooth bottom from 1948 to 1961. This era of Stanley planes is considered to be the last of the “good” Stanley planes, before corners started to be cut in quality. I’ve removed surface rust and tuned it up. The iron has the appropriate sweetheart BB trademark from 1935 on and is almost completely full length. The iron has been squared and honed nice and sharp on a Shapton glass stone up to 16000 grit with just a touch of camber at the edges to avoid plane tracks. The back of the iron has been honed to 16000 grit using the ruler trick. The chip breaker edge has been flattened to 1000 grit to mate with the iron. The rosewood tote and knob are in fantastic original shape. I hand buffed the tote and knob with 0000 steel wool and paste wax. The sole has been lapped flat. There are some pit marks and staining on the sole, as pictured, but it’s been lapped nice and smooth. There is a tiny little hole near the back of the sole. The sole, cheeks, and bed have all been hand buffed with a layer of paste wax. There are previous owner etchings on the following places- lever cap, iron, and plane cheek, as pictured. Classic Gary move. This plane is taking nice wispy shavings and is ready for another 70 years of use!
